St. Johns County Parks and Recreation

JAN. 11 AND 13 | WALK THE (WRACK) LINE

Ever wonder what is in the wrack line that washes up on the beach? Now is your chance to learn. Join County Naturalist Kelly Ussia to explore the wrack line and identify the amazing things that end up there. Participants will get to walk the beach and comb through the wrack line to learn about the importance of the wrack line, creatures that utilize the wrack line, and objects that often end up there.

The walks will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Vilano Beach, 2750 Anahma Dr., Vilano, FL 32084.

JAN. 13 | CHILDREN’S SHOREBIRD NESTING PROGRAM

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation has partnered with St. Johns County Audubon to present a free shorebird nesting program. This program is for children in third grade and up. Participants will learn about the unique birds that nest along local beaches and participate in activities that mirror what the real bird biologists do to protect local nesting sites.

The program is free and will take place Saturday 10 a.m. to noon at Nease Beach-front Park, located at 3171 Coastal Highway, Vilano, FL 32084.

JAN. 17 AND 25 | WALK THROUGH TIME

St. Johns County Parks and Recreation has partnered with the county Cultural Resource Coordinator to offer a new exciting program about the history of Butler Beach. Take a walk back in time and learn about the important cultural and ecological history of this unique area.

The walks will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Frank B. Butler Park East, 5860 A1A South, St. Augustine, FL 32080.

JAN. 20 | OWL PROWL

Join the St. Johns County Naturalist for a free guided walk to explore a county park after dark with the County Naturalist.

Participants will learn about creatures of the night, including the resident owls. Those who wish to attend should dress for the weather and bring a flashlight, bug spray and water.

The Saturday walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Alpine Groves Park, 2060 S.R. 13, St. Johns, Florida 32259.

JAN. 27 | RIVER BLESSING

The River Blessing is spiritual but non-religious, and is inspired by first nation’s teachings. The Matanzas and St. Johns River Keepers present to speak about the river and offer inspirational words. Drums are welcome for a simple heart beat during the blessing.

The blessing begins at 9 a.m. at Alpine Groves Park, 2060 S.R. 13, St. Johns, FL 32259.

JAN. 27 | BELUTHAHATCHEE OPEN HOUSE

Drop in for a tour of the historic Beluthahatchee Park. This site has the distinct honor of being the only site that is a National Literary Landmark that honors two writers — Stetson Kennedy and Woody Guthrie. Learn about the friendship shared between these two amazing men and tour Stetson Kennedy’s home.

The home will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Beluthahatchee Park, 1523 State Road 13, St. Johns, FL 32259.
