**The Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin ® has set the precedent for world-class, million … June 22-26, 2016 | Rise Up Takes Top Prize œ $431,835!**
The 835.8 pound blue marlin brought in by Breathe Easy of Orange Beach AL is measured at the weigh scale during the 2016 Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Sandestin, Friday, June 24, 2016.
Just around 5 p.m. Friday night, Scott Poppell got a bite on his fishing rod unlike any hed gotten before. Six hours later, he was able to lay eyes on his prize.
It was a fish spectators and judges of the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic hadnt seen on the dock this week: an 838.2-pound blue marlin, surpassing the previous first-place leading 835.8-pounder, caught Friday morning by “Breathe Easy angler Chad Postle.
“Ive caught blue marlin that were 600 pounds smaller, Poppell said. “This is the biggest fish Ive caught, by far. She incredible.
“It was an intense battle. She would come up and go down, come up and go down. Everybody quiet. It was a tense, tense moment. (But) it jubilee when the fish comes on the boat.
As of 8:45 p.m. Saturday night, the fish held first place in the blue marlin category. If it held on as the heaviest by the end of competition, Poppell catch could earn the “Rise Up crew $315,000.
“The captain (Rusty Skalla) and crew did a phenomenal job, Poppell said. “Those guys do nothing but work their behinds off. They fish harder than anyone Ive been around. All I did was line the fish in.
Owner Skalla said “Rise Up caught a blue marlin last week but arrived to the tournament weigh-in a minute and forty-five seconds late. The fish would have been the heaviest at the tournament.
“This is fishing, Scala said. “This is what it all about. It the largest fish weve ever landed.
As of 8:10 p.m. Saturday, Poppell was followed in the blue marlin category by “Breathe Easy angler Chad Postle Friday morning catch (835.8 pound) and “The Kraken angler Fouad Zayed’s 652.2-pound catch.
At 8:20 p.m., world-renowned chef Emeril Lagasse, aboard “Aldente, brought in the tournament-leading heaviest dolphin: 36.6 pounds.
Bam.
Around 6:40 p.m., Lynn Layton of Lucky 2 brought in a Blue Marlin Classic record with a 112.2-pound wahoo. It took him 45 minutes to reel in.
“We didnt know what it was because it never came up, Lawton said. “We thought at first it was a blue marlin because it was so heavy. But it was a wahoo. Thank goodness.
“We thought we might have a record because it the biggest one we have seen and the biggest one the captain has seen, Lawton said.
By 8:45 p.m., it has been the largest wahoo to make it to the dock. If it held on, it won the crew around $66,000. At press time, Lucky 2 also brought in the second-heaviest wahoo at 69.8 pounds, caught by angler Conrad Hawkins.
Lawton had caught an 89-pound wahoo a couple of years ago and came in second to a 91-pounder.
Said Lawton with a smile, “Were number one now.
